John Dick was an Englishman who served as the printer for Douglass’ newspaper, North Star. Dick relocated to Rochester to join the venture. Eventually Dick married Eliza Griffiths, the sister of Julia Griffiths, Douglass’ close friend and ally.
“Eliza and John Dick, the printer in the North Star office, also boarded in the Douglasses’ house. Eliza and John were about to be married and would emigrate to Canada in June 1850.”[1]
The Dicks eventually moved all the way to New Zealand. John Dick died there on April 7, 1895 at the age of 77. He was buried in Northern Cemetery in Dunedin, New Zealand.
