James A. Garfield

James A. Garfield was the 20th President of the United States serving in 1881. As the Republican nominee, Frederick Douglass campaigned for Garfield even though he was not terribly enthusiastic about the candidate. As Marshal of D.C., Douglass participated in a place of honor over Garfield’s inauguration. During Garfield’s presidency, Douglass was not reappointed as D.C. Marshal but was given a lower position as the Recorder of Deeds.

James Garfield was assassinated by Charles Guiteau, dying on September 19, 1881 at the age of 49. He was buried in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.
