George DeBaptiste was a leader of the Detroit Colored Vigilance Committee, a group known for using militant actions to help fugitive slaves escape into Canada. DeBaptiste supported John Brown and his different plans for a violent uprising against slavery. Douglass met with DeBaptiste and Brown while in Detroit in 1859.
George DeBaptiste died on February 22, 1875 at about the age of 58. He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan.
