Rosetta Douglass was the eldest child of Frederick and Anna Douglass. She later wrote about her mother’s life in the shadow of her famous father. Rosetta married an African American Civil War veteran named Nathan Sprague but their marriage was tumultuous at times.
“Rosetta was an intelligent, highly literate woman trapped in a cluster of gendered values she could never escape.”
Rosetta Douglass Sprague died on November 25, 1906 at the age of 67. She was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester, New York. Her grave is separate from the family’s plot and is one that she shares with Sprague.
